Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Proverbs 4:25
Observation: This chapter begins with a father’s instruction to his son about how to live life wisely. He instructs his son to direct his gaze in one direction–a forward direction–to secure his sight on what is in front of him. In other words, not to make past things the focus of his attention or become distracted by things in his periphery.
Application: As I work on being a person who finishes what she starts. I find that a constant challenge I face is in the area of focus. I am easily distracted and take my eyes off the prize. These distractions always tend to be me focusing on past attempts and failures or comparing myself to others and coming up short. I am often left deflated and uninspired to continue on the course. I read this verse and hear God, my father, telling me that my sight, my attention, my movement should always be forward marching . If all I am seeing is my past or others it’s a clear indication and warning of where my focus is, and I am veering off course and need to redirect and refocus. I cannot focus on what is behind me or be vacillating between directions. I can only walk in the direction of my focus. Focusing on the past keeps me there! Attempting to focus on what’s ahead of me while looking at what’s behind keeps me frozen…like a pillar of salt…My only viable option for progress is giving my full attention to what lies ahead.
Prayer: God, thank you for your word. I pray that you open my heart and mind to receive your instruction . Please help me to live in this revelation. You know that I tend to get caught up and focus on past things, and more times than not, they leave me discouraged and stuck. I need your help in renewing my mind to set my focus on what’s ahead of me instead of what is behind me or on others. I trust that the Holy Spirit who is in me will guide me and alert me when I am losing focus and help me redirect my gaze. Teach me how to live in the truth of this word. In Jesus Name, Amen.
